-I suffered from bulimia for nearly 10 years!
I experienced many of its terrifying side effects and was lucky to escape with my life.
-Many people never seek help for their bulimia and live with this illness for years, even many decades ...
Too often bulimia kills.
People don't understand the true dangers in bulimia.
They think that because bulimics are often a healthy weight that it's a safe eating disorder ... The truth couldn't be more different .
- Below I have listed the TOP 5 Terrifying Dangers in Bulimia:
1) Electrolyte Imbalance
We need the correct balance of electrolytes in our bodies to ensure our muscles, organs and nerves work well. Bulimics often suffer from severe electrolyte imbalances caused by extreme vomiting or laxative abuse.
-Electrolyte imbalances put massive stress on your organs and can cause sudden cardiac arrest and death.
This is what happened to Terri Schiavo. It didn't quite kill her - but she became brain dead and remained in a vegetative state for 15 years...
-Eventually her husband won a court case to remove her feeding tube and allow her to starve to death.
The story of Terri Schiavo terrifies me because when I was bulimic my electrolyte levels were so low. I had an irregular heart beat and severe chest pains. I feel so grateful that I escaped with my life.
2) Gastric Rupture
A gastric rupture happens when a bulimic person eats a massive amount of food during a binge. The volume of food that you have eaten is so great that it bursts your gastro-intestinal tract.
-Gastric Ruptures are one of the most most terrifying of all bulimia complications... It will most likely kill you and it will be so unexpected.
I remember numerous occasions when I ate so much that I was sure something had to spilt! Thank goodness it never did... Again, I thank my lucky star!
Ketoacidosis is when high levels of acids build up in your bloodstream. These acids are also known as ketones. They occur when your body burns stored fat, rather than food sources, to gain it's energy.
-It is caused by starvation, bingeing and purging, extreme dehydration, diabetes, alcoholism and hyperglycemia.
-If Ketoacidosis is not treated, it could result in a sudden coma and even death.
Many bulimics suffer from constant and severe acid reflux. This is because they have damaged their 'non-return valve' which helps to keep food down
-1 in every 10 people who suffer from terrible acid reflux will develop a condition called from Barrett's Esophagus.
-Barrett's Esophagus can lead to cancer of the esophagus. This is extremely dangerous as it is often discovered at a late stage - once treatment is difficult and ineffective.
If a person with Barrett's esophagus is found to have severe cancer, Removal of most of the esophagus is recommended. Nasty stuff!
Its terrifying to know that bulimia can lead to cancer!
Bulimia and depression are two intertwined illnesses. It can be hard to pin point which started first... and which one caused the other.
-In my case, depression definitely triggered off my bulimia... Leaving Zimbabwe (my home) in my early teens spun my life out of control. I became depressed and that depression manifested itself as bulimia.
Once I had developed bulimia, it was desperately hard to break the habit... The cycle of bulimia and depression ran it's course for 10 long years.
-Bulimia can cause severe depression. It makes you feel disgusted in yourself, alone and helpless. You feel like a freak.
Most of all you feel ashamed. Because of this severe depression, suicide becomes a real concern.
-Bulimics are so disgusted and ashamed of themselves that they don't seek help. They suffer in silence until they can't take it anymore.
-How PREVENT and AVOID these terrifying bulimia complications:
These dangers in bulimia are what drove me to get help.
-I didn't want bulimia to win the battle.
I have now been bulimia free for over 4 years. I am healthy and happy.
I have managed to avoid any of the serious bulimia complications... although I do suffer from bulimia teeth - but that's nothing a dentist can't fix (at a price!)
-I am alive and bulimia is a part of my past... Not a part of my future.
To help reduce the chances of suffering from these complications, you need to try and eat plenty of fresh and healthy food... And you need to try to keep it down. Your body needs the nutrients to work properly and heal any damage you have already done.
The best way to prevent and avoid the side effects of bulimia is to recover.
-And you CAN recover! If I did - anybody can. I truly believe that.
Bulimia Recovery is Real. You Have a Life Beyond This Prison.
Bulimia used to own me... I'd spend hours every day with my head in the loo, watering eyes, burning throat and aching heart. My self worth getting chipped away at... bit by bit, binge by binge.
-I had suffered from bulimia for nearly 10 years. I wanted to stop...
I needed to stop... But after a decade, I didn't know how.
BUT... Guess What? I Recovered and You Can Too! I have been bulimia free for over 4 years... And it is wonderful!
-I do have days when I wish away little bits of fat, or drool over donuts in the bakery window... But those are passing thoughts in an otherwise glorious life.
They don't rule over me. They don't drive me to the loo... Or to the shower, or into the garden, or to the tupperware hidden in my cupboard!
Are you thinking "My case is BAD, I'm passed all help"
... I was as hopeless as a cat trying to catch it's shadow. I'd throw up 20+ times a day. My life was ruled by bulimia.
-You and me - we're no different. If I recovered - you can too!
